Dartmouth Admits 15.4 Percent Overall
Dartmouth offered admission to 2,150 of the 13,937 applicants to its class of 2010, or a record low 15.4 percent. Approximately 17 percent were offered admission last year. 1,752 were admitted through the regular process and 398 were accepted early.
The applicant pool was extremely competitive. Of the total applicants, about 2,200 students had received an 800 on either the verbal or math portions of the SAT, more than the total number of students ultimately admitted.
Early decision applications went up 12 percent to 1,317. A total of 398 seniors were accepted early decision, resulting in a 30% acceptance rate.
60 of the 398 early admits are legacies; 95 are valedictorians; 4 are salutatorians. The mean SAT math score for early admits was 718; the mean SAT verbal score was 706; the mean SAT writing score was 704.
Regular applications increased 10 percent, as more than 14,000 students applied this year. This record breaking number of applications continues a five year growth rate of 10 percent in the total number of applications received every year.
International applications increased 19 percent. Applications from students of color increased 12 percent.
Demographics
62 more females than males were admitted; this resulted in women representing 51.4 percent of the admits. International student acceptances dropped slightly from recent years, with foreign students making up 7 percent of the admitted class. Students of color represented 39.5 percent of admits, up slightly from last year's 38.8 percent. African American, Latino, multi-racial, Asian American and Native American students represented 9.6 percent, 7.6 percent, 1.0 percent, 17.7 percent and 3.6 of acceptances respectively. 147 students, or 6.8 percent of admits, are Dartmouth legacies. |
